Here are ways to maintain your sanity this winter period while staying with your family that I use 👇🏾💖 Let me know if you have any other tips! 1. Quiet space Plan your escape plan if your family overwhelm you (ideally before you go back home). This could be : • a quiet room in your house (this may be difficult) • a safe walking route to take a walk to regulate your emotions while practicing breathing exercises. Make it a colour walk! The UK can be pretty grey at this period of time but you could look for all of the brown things you find on your walk for example. 2. Setting boundaries Try to communicate your boundaries, if these are not respected and it compromises your safety do not feel guilty about seeking external help to deal with this. If setting boundaries is unsuccessful and it effects your physical or mental health; • from experience remember that in most cases you do not owe it to people who damage your mental health to spend your time with them. Consider what your other options are this winter. I personally I would rather and actually do spend it alone, when the alternative options affect my mental health journey. 3. Alternative options Do you have other options to spending time with family if it is not a safe space for your mental health? Examples of other options: • friendsmas/ friendsgivings : I often spend time with friends during this period to provide the sense of community that is often missed by not being with immediate family in the winter season. • self care week/day. If you live alone and will be sending this period alone. Prioritise self care this week! Wash your hair, put on a candle, play your favourite playlist, and eat your favourite meal. Remember you have the capacity to fill yourself with the joy you deserve! If you want us to hold community socials during this period do let me know!
